Character references for family court (with template)

A good character reference gives the court something nothing else can: an outside view of you as a parent. A bad one is generic praise that judges skip. This guide covers who to ask, what they should write, and the formatting that gets a reference read rather than flicked past.

Who makes a good referee

What the letter must contain

  1. Who the referee is: name, job, address, and how long and in what capacity they have known you - the single most important line.
  2. Specific observations: "I have watched Mr X do the nursery run every Tuesday for three years", not "he is a good man".
  3. Direct knowledge of the child/children where possible.
  4. Honesty about limits: a referee who acknowledges they cannot speak to everything is more credible than one who claims perfection.
  5. Date, signature, printed name and contact details - the court may contact them.

Formatting rules

Treat it like any exhibit: reference it in your witness statement, paginate it into your bundle, and follow the document standards courts expect (dated, signed, identifiable author). A reference should be typed or clearly legible, on one or two pages maximum.

Template

To the Family Court at [court name]

I am [full name], [age] of [address], employed as [job] since [year]. I have known [party] for [NUMBER] years as [context: neighbour/childminder/fellow scout leader], during which time I have regularly observed them caring for [child's name], who is [age].

In that time I have personally seen: [2-4 SPECIFIC observations with dates/seasons - e.g. "the daily school run", "managing [child]'s asthma at our holiday club in summer 2025"].

[One honest, measured paragraph on character - avoid absolutes.]

I make this statement honestly, believing its contents to be true.

FAQ

Do family court judges read character references?
Yes - when they are specific and observational. Generic praise letters are given minimal weight.
Can a family member write a character reference?
Yes, but their closeness reduces weight; courts generally favour referees with professional or long-term independent observation of your parenting.
